Overview
Permanent residents who meet the physical presence, tax filing and other requirements can apply to become Canadian citizens. Most adult applicants also take a citizenship test and must show knowledge of English or French. Errors in counting days or reporting travel are common causes of delay.
Key requirements at a glance
- Valid permanent resident status, with no unfulfilled conditions or removal order
- Physically present in Canada at least 1,095 days (3 years) in the 5 years before you apply
- Time as a temporary resident or protected person may count as half-days, up to 365 days
- Filed income taxes for at least 3 years in the 5-year period, if required
- Adults 18 to 54: proof of language ability and a citizenship test
