LMIA work permits
Employer-specific work permits supported by a Labour Market Impact Assessment.
Overview
Many employer-specific work permits require a Labour Market Impact Assessment (LMIA) from Employment and Social Development Canada (ESDC). A positive LMIA confirms that the employer needs a foreign worker and that no Canadian or permanent resident is available for the job. The worker then applies to IRCC for the work permit.
Key requirements at a glance
- The employer applies to ESDC for the LMIA and must meet wage, advertising and other requirements
- Rules differ for high-wage and low-wage positions, and some locations and sectors have extra restrictions
- Once the LMIA is approved, the worker applies for an employer-specific work permit
- Some work permits are LMIA-exempt, for example under trade agreements or intra-company transfers
How we can help
- Assess whether an LMIA is needed or an exemption applies
- Advise employers on LMIA requirements
- Prepare the worker's work permit application
