Overview
Most international students need a study permit to study in Canada for longer than six months. Officers look at whether your study plan is genuine, whether you can pay for it, and whether you will leave Canada when your permit expires. Your choice of school and program also affects whether you can work after graduation.
Planning to settle in Canada later? Québec runs its own immigration system. If your long-term goal is permanent residence through a federal program, factor this into where you choose to study.
Key requirements at a glance
- A letter of acceptance from a designated learning institution (DLI)
- In most cases, a provincial or territorial attestation letter (PAL/TAL) from your school
- Proof of funds for tuition, living expenses and return transportation for you and any family members
- Medical exam and police certificates if required
- Studying in Québec: a Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ) is generally required as well
